Moving Object Detection Video Images Using Matlab Computer Science Essay Moving object detection is an important research topic of computer vision and video processing areas. Detection of moving objects In video streams is the first relevant step of information extraction in many computer vision applications.. This paper puts forward an improved background subtraction of moving object detection of fixed camera condition. Then combining the adaptive background subtraction with symmetrical differencing obtains the integrity foreground image. Using chromaticity difference to eliminate the shadow of the moving target, effectively distinguishes moving shadow and moving target. The results show that the algorithm could quickly establish the background model and detect integrity moving target rapidly. Moving object detection is an important part of digital image processing techniques and it is the base of the many following sophisticated processing task such as target recognition and tracking, target classification, behavior understanding and analysis .Aside from the intrinsic usefulness of being able to segment video streams into moving and background components, detecting moving objects provides a focus of attention for recognition, classification and activity analysis. The technology has a wide application prospect such as smart monitor, autonomous navigation, human computer interaction, virtual reality and so on. This paper studies the method of obtaining the data of moving object from video images by background extraction. Object detection requires two steps: background extraction and object extraction. Moving object detection needs static background image. Since each frame of video image has moving object then background extraction is necessary. Each frame image subtracting the background image can get the moving object image. This is object extraction. Then the moving object detection can be achieved. This paper firstly introduces two moving object detection algorithms of fixed scenes frame difference method and moving edge method and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages, and then presents a new algorithm based on them, lastly gives the experimental results and analysis Background extraction of moving object Background extraction means that the background, the static scene, is extracted from the video image. Because the camera is fixed, each pixel of the image has a corresponding background value which is basically fixed over a period of time. Well known issues in background extraction include 1)Light changes: background model should adapt to gradual illumination changes. 2)Moving background: background model should include changing background that is not of interest for visual surveillance such as moving trees 3) Cast shadows: the background model should include the shadow cast by the moving objects that apparently behaves itself moving in order to have a more accurate detection of moving object shape. 4)Bootstrapping: the background model should be properly setup even in absence of a complete and static training set at the beginning of the segment 5) Camouflage: moving objects should be detected even if their chromatic features are similar to those of thebackground model. . Calculation of consecutive frames subtraction The method utilizes current two frames or the differences between the current frame and its previous frame to extract a motion region. In this paper, we adopt its improvement methods namely symmetrical differencing, that means image differences of the three current frames. This method can remove effects of unveiling background which is caused by motion, accurately obtain contour of moving targets. In the conventional background subtraction method, a fixed reference background model for the intended surveillance area is constructed in advance. The conventional background subtraction method extracts moving targets based on the difference between the current image and the reference background model. It works well for applications in controlled environments, in which a constant illumination scenario can be achieved artificially. However, for other visual tracking applications such as traffic monitoring and security/surveillance, the illumination conditions change over time so that a fixed reference background model is not realistic and may eventually lead to a detection failure. Consequently, construction and maintenance of a reliable and accurate reference background model is crucial in background subtraction based motion detection approaches. Figure 1 algorithm for background subtraction Typical moving object detection algorithms Frame difference method To detect moving object in the surveillance video captured by immobile camera, the simplest method is the frame difference method for the reason that it has great detection speed, can be implemented on hardware easily and has been used widely. While detecting moving object by frame difference method, in the difference image, the unchanged part is eliminated while the changed part remains. This change is caused by movement or noise, so it calls for a binary process upon the difference image to distinguish the moving objects and noise. Connected component labeling is also needed to acquire the smallest rectangle containing the moving objects. The noise is assumed as Gaussian white noise in calculating the threshold of the binary process. According to the theory of statistics, there is hardly any pixel which has dispersion more than 3 times of standard deviation. Thus the threshold is calculated as following: T â‚ ¬Ã‚ ½Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  u â‚ ¬Ã‚ «Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  3 ¶ While u is the mean of the difference image  ¶ â‚ ¬Ã‚  is the standard deviation of the difference image. The flow chart of the detecting process by frame method is shown in fig 2 Fig 2 Frame Differencing Method Moving edge method Difference image can be regarded as time gradient, while edge image is space gradient. Moving edge can be defined by the logic AND operation of difference image and the edge image . The advantage of frame difference method is its small calculation, and the disadvantage is that it is sensitive to the noise. If the objects do not move but the brightness of the background changes, the results of frame difference methods may be not accurate enough. Since the edge has no relation with the brightness, moving edge method can overcome the disadvantage of frame difference method. The flow chart of the detecting process by moving edge method is shown in fig 3 Fig 3. Moving edge method Improved Moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection Moving edge method can effectively suppress the noise caused by light, but it still has some misjudgments to some other noise. This paper proposes an improved algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection. Upon analysis, the method has better noise suppression and higher detection accuracy. 1. Algorithm introduction The flow chart of the detection process by using the method based on frame difference and edge detection presented in this paper Fig 4. Improved Algorithm The steps of new algorithm presented in this paper are as follows. (1) Get edge images Ek-1 and Ek by edge detection with two continuous frames Fk-1 and Fk by using Canny edge detector. (2) Get edge difference image Dk by difference between Ek and Ek-1. (3) Divide edge difference image Dk into some certain small blocks and count the number of non-zero pixels in the block, and recorded it as Sk. (4) If Sk is larger than the threshold, mark the block is a moving area, otherwise it is a static area. Let 1 presents moving area and 0 presents static area, we can get a matrix M. (5) Do connected components labeling to M, and remove the connected components that are too small. (6) Get the smallest rectangles containing the moving objects. The algorithm has improved both the object Segmentation and object locating. .2 Object segmentation Object segmentation is to divide the image into moving area and static area. The algorithm presented in this paper will get the edge images first,then difference them to get the edge difference image. In thefinal image we get, the pixel value of background area equal to 0 and pixel value of the edge of movingobjects equal to 1. Now we will compare the difference between our algorithm and moving edge method (1) In moving edge method, assume two continuous frames are Fk-1 and Fk, background is B, moving objects are Mk-1 and Mk, and independent white noise is Nk-1 and Nk for two frames each. Then we can have So we can get the difference between two frames: Use Canny edge detection with frames Fk. We can get edge image Ek. Then we can get the result: EMk, ENk are edge images caused by Mk and Nk each. Define signal noise ratio is While SEM is the number of edges caused by moving objects, and SEN is the number of edges caused by noise. Then we know the SNR of the moving edge method is (2) In our method, we first get edge images by edge detector: Then by difference we get Since in the practical system, the difference between two edge images is absolute value of the difference value and the edges of two images are not the same when the objects are moving So actually in the edge difference image we can have the sum of the edges of two frames. Because the noise is independent and two frames are dependent with each other, we can have The SNR in our algorithm is It shows that the SNR in our algorithm is less than the moving edge method. Our method will work more efficiently. 3..Detection of moving cast shadows To prevent the moving shadows being misclassified as moving objects or parts of moving objects, this paper represents an explicit method of detection of moving cast shadows on a dominating scene background. These shadows are generated by objects between a light source and the background. Moving cast shadows cause a frame difference between two succeeding images of a monocular video image sequence. For shadow detection these frame differences are detected and classified into regions covered and regions uncovered by a moving shadow. The detection and classification assume plane background and a non negligible size and intensity of light sources. A cast shadow is detected by temporal integration of the covered background regions while subtracting the covered background regions. The shadow detection method is integrated into an algorithm for 2D shape estimation of moving objects. The extended segmentation algorithm compensates first apparent camera motion. then a spatially adaptive relax ation scheme estimates a change detection mask for two consecutive images. An object mask is derived from the change detection mask by elimination of changes due to background uncovered by moving objects and the elimination of changes due to background covered or uncovered by moving cast shadows. Experimental results and analysis In this paper, an improved moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection is brought forward The operating environment is Windows XP. Programming environment is Matlab 8.0. Size of the sequence image is 640ÃÆ'-480. Partial stimulation results are as follows. From the results we can see that the improved moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection has much greater recognition rate and higher detection speed than several classical algorithms. This algorithm will appear individual false under more complicated background.There is still room for improvement. V. Conclusion This paper presents an improved moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection. This method not only retains the small calculation from frame difference method and the impregnability of light from edge detection method, but also improves in noise restraining. Meanwhile, it divides the image to small blocks to do connected component labeling, significantly speeding up the detection. This puts Macbeth at a loss for words , they then look at banquo and tell him his sons will be king someday aswell but not him. â€Å"All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis/ All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor/ All hail, Macbeth, Thou shalt be king hereafter! † (1. 3. 50-53). This is the first set of prophecies the witches made and the start to Macbeth’s downfall. What the witches done to Macbeth with these prophecies to make him commence his downfall was they filled his head with these positive flattering things that made him want to go to extreme measures just to become what the witches proclaimed would happen. Proof that this first set of prophecies commenced his downfall is once king Duncan had named malcom to be king apposed to Macbeth, Macbeth then considered the idea that he should murder Duncan to become king. The second set of prophecies given to Macbeth appeared as apparitions by the three witches and each apparition gave Macbeth a different prophecy. The first prophecy is an armed head which tells Macbeth to beware of Macduff â€Å" Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff. Beware the thane of Fife. Dismiss me. Enough. † (4. 1. 74-75). The second apparition appeared as a bloody child who tells Macbeth the only person who can harm him is a man not born of a woman. â€Å" Be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scorn/The power of man, for none of woman born/Shall harm Macbeth. † (4. 1. 81-83). The final apparition summoned by the witches was a crowned child holding a tree that states Macbeth will not be killed until the woods of birnam are at Dunsinane Hill. Be lion-me ttled, proud, and take no care/Who chafes, who frets, or where conspirers are. /Macbeth shall never vanquished be until/Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill/Shall come against him. † (4. 1. 94-98). These summons created by the witches are a big part in Macbeth’s downfall because they gave him more confidence that he would not be killed. Macbeth believed that these prophecies were ridiculous and that it was impossible for him to happen although he did not think them through because all of these prophecies came true in the end. Although the witches gave Macbeth these prophecies making him over confident and giving him the idea to kill Duncan they are not the only ones to blame, Macbeth’s wife Lady Macbeth also played a big role in the downfall of Macbeth by persuading Macbeth to kill King Duncan. She did this by telling him that if the witches prophecies were to come true and he were to become king he must kill those who stood in the way. She then proceeds to question his manhood and makes him feel guilty for her when she says she would kill her own child if she had promised it to her beloved to do it. What beast was ’t, then, That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man. Nor time nor place Did then adhere, and yet you would make both. They have made themselves, and that their fitness now Does unmake you. I have given suck, and know How tender ’tis to love the babe that milks me . I would, while it was smiling in my face, Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done to this. † (1. 7. 47-59). Lady Macbeth was fully capable of killing the king herself, she had made a good plot to kill him but she never killed him herself because she claimed King Duncan reminded her of her father. â€Å"Had he not resembled/My father as he slept, I had done ’t. † (2. 2. 12-13). If Lady Macbeth would have performed the murder herself Macbeth would not have been driven mad. After Macbeth killed King Duncan the guilt he felt was taking over his mind, saying that there was blood on his hands that would not come off. Lady Macbeth could maybe have comforted him in this time of need but instead she called him mad nd put him down. Although both the witches and Lady Macbeth were contributors to Macbeth’s death they cannot take all the blame for Macbeths death, Macbeth himself plays a big role in the his tragic death. Macbeth knew killing King Duncan was wrong he was always loyal to the king and Duncan trusted Macbeth greatly but he let the witches get into his head and let their prophecies corrupt his mind without no proof saying he had to kill Duncan to become king. Although Lady Macbeth gave him guilt and questioned his manliness he could have told her no he could have told her no and went with what he knew was best. Macbeth’s ambition to hold his spot on the throne was another good reason as to why he died, after killing Duncan Macbeth decided that he should also kill Banquo because Macbeth thought Banquo would suspect him after the prophecies the witches made. This was a mistake by Macbeth because this only made Macbeth more aggressive and his desire to kill stronger. The main mistake Macbeth made was the faith he had towards the prophecies made by the witches, he felt he was invincible. Even once the prophecy about the Birnam Woods reached the castle he belived he could not be killed by anyone because he thought all men were born of a woman. â€Å"Fear not, till Birnam wood/Do come to/Dunsinane†; and now a wood/Comes toward Dunsinane. ’(5. 5. 43-45) â€Å"Thou wast born of woman. /But swords I smile at, weapons laugh to scorn,/Brandished by man that’s of a woman born. (5. 7. 13-15). This confidence followed Macbeth right to his fight against Macduff, once he began to fight with macduff we learn that macduff was actually ripped out of his mothers stomach and not born from the womb making him not born bt a woman. â€Å"Despair thy charm,/And let the angel whom thou still hast served/Tell thee,/Macduff was from his mother’s womb/Untimely ripped. (5. 8. 13-17). Macbeth then accepted his fate and fought Macduff and lost his life. Although there was multiple factors that led to Macbeths demise such as evil witches and a power hungry wife the one who played the biggest role in his death was Macbeth himself. Even though all of the witches prophecies came true there no proof saying they were destined to come true but only that Macbeth caused these prophecies to be true. If Macbeth would have did what he knew was right he would have saved the lives of a lot of people including the wife he loved so dearly.

“Hiroshima” by John Hersey Essay

The human mind cannot comprehend the split-second deaths of 100 000 people when the atomic bomb hit the people of Japan in August, 1945. However this event, which has changed the world forever, can be relived through the lives of six survivors in John Hersey’s Hiroshima. Expository texts such as the aforementioned often present powerful social issues which challenge not only the reader from the contemporary Western culture but also the reader from the 1946 American society. Hersey employs various techniques, including point of view, tone, emotive and descriptive language to position readers to respond to changing priorities, Japan’s reaction to the crisis and moral and ethical issues. Up until Hersey’s account of the Hiroshima bombing, texts that were presented to readers were fabricated propaganda and contained the preconception that dropping the bomb was not ethically wrong. This influenced readers in that context to feel as if the Americans had taken the right action to end the war. However, Hersey writes Hiroshima in the point-of-view of six †hibakusha’s†, focussing entirely on their stories of endurance and hope throughout the atomic blast. As he writes in such a journalistic style and detaches any feelings or opinions he may have about the event, he forces readers to draw their own conclusions from the facts and question the morality of the Americans and their president. Quoted from Rhodes, the making of the Atomic Bomb from a scientist who took part in assembling the bomb, â€Å"†¦I still remember the feeling of unease, even nausea, when I saw many of my friends rushing to celebrate. Of course we were exalted by the success o f our work, but it seemed rather ghoulish to celebrate the sudden death of a hundred thousand people, even if they were â€Å"enemies†Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ. Hersey portrays the six characters not as enemies, but as normal people, with real values and attitudes which elicits resentment towards the Americans and encourages readers to sympathise with the Japanese characters. To reconstruct the effect of the blast and its dismal consequences on Japan’s population, Hersey selects a variety of characters such as a widow, a priest and a surgeon to resemble the microcosm of Japanese society. Not once does Hersey question or agree with the decision to drop the bomb nor does he sympathise with the Japanese victims but by emphasising the survival instead of the suffering he prevents his book from becoming anti-American, therefore  broadening his target audience. The only way â€Å"Hiroshima† would be read by the â€Å"New York Time’s† loyal readers was for Hersey to write in this unemotional tone, for example â€Å"†¦they had not had the strength to move; they must have drowned.† This is a style which is se en today as a clever way to escape extreme controversy. Of course it is inhumane to kill thousands of innocent people without warning and â€Å"The eyebrows of some were burned off and skin hung from their faces and hands. Often, because of pain, they held their hands up as if carrying something in both hands.† The descriptive language throughout the novel proves the abovementioned point to the reader. Still, you have to consider the context before making judgement on the decision to drop the bomb. Truman may have been concerned for his countries welfare but there were many other alternatives. Surely readers can see that now, but Hersey’s use of language techniques in his recount of Hiroshima was taking the American readers one step closer to realising the truth; that Truman’s resolution to drop the bomb â€Å"†¦in order to shorten the agony of war [and] in order to save the lives of thousands of young Americans† [Public Papers of the President, Truman, 1945] not only ended the war but inflicted suffering and death to thousands of innocent people. Very few of Hersey’s characters have close family ties, further emphasising the way Japan comes together as a community in the time of this crisis. Unscathed are aiding the wounded on the riverbank, providing water, food, and comfort as though they were family. Readers are positioned to accept the character’s attempts to help the people that are only strangers to them. However even though these six characters help one another to try to rebuild their lives, each suffers on their own. â€Å"The hurt ones were quiet, no one wept, much less screamed in pain, no one complained†¦not even the children cried.† After the explosion the lack of dialogue creates an eerie, almost silent atmosphere to portray the peaceful and humble characteristics of the Japanese people. The characters have an admirable patience and endurance shown in the face of adversity. When father Kleinsorge offers water to the wounded, â€Å"almost blotted out by flash burns, they [take] their share and bowed to him in thanks.† No one shouts out in rage or promises revenge towards their opposing country. The techniques Hersey has employed in this text positions the reader to accept the Japanese culture and realise that  even though thousands of lives were lost, the attack on Hiroshima brought the community together and shaped it into the country it is today. On the morning of the attack, the citizens of Japan were living like ordinary people, with priorities and values which would be similar to those we have in our contemporary Western society. However they were completely unaware that their priorities would change dramatically when the bomb was dropped, destroying their lives and tearing apart their families. The detail selected encourages readers to experience the severe shock that is instilled into the characters as they come to terms with their new situation. â€Å"Things don’t matter anymore. Yesterday my shoes were my most important possessions. Today I don’t care. One pair is enough.† This symbolises the preciousness of life and the insignificance of material possessions. The suffering of thousands of people and their wounds and burns are described repeatedly and the injured and dying are so numerous that the doctors no longer help the badly injured because they are not going to survive. Dr Sasaki is faced with the decision to leave the severely wounded and readers are positioned to sympathise for him as making this decision in the devastating circumstances would be almost impossible. He feels that they will â€Å"die feeling cheated† if he tells the victims he will return to help, only leaving them to die. Combined with the point of view of each character, readers are encouraged to respond to the bombing with feelings of anger and empathy towards the six survivors and the way it has affected their priorities and their future. Hersey’s bleak yet graphic account of the Hiroshima bombing is a novel which can be read for generations and still capture the horror of war and the endurance of the Japanese people. Hiroshima encourages readers of today’s western society as well as the readers in 1946 to respond to the text with feelings of sympathy, anger and remorse. Hersey employs techniques such as selection of detail, language, tone and point of view to encourage readers to be challenged by the powerful social values; changing priorities, Japan’s reaction to the crisis and moral and ethical issues which are embedded in the text. Overall Hersey exposes the true side of war to the readers; the side which is not glorified but elicits extreme loss of life and untold suffering.
